The answer may surprise you
Nonprofit Executive Directors are the face of the organization and without a doubt, do may things. But what is their primary role? That question was posed as a short survey on Harvest Development Group’s LinkedIn page and participants were asked to choose from from the following as a short list of options:
- Board Development
- Fund Raising
- Program Development
- Financial Oversight
The survey says….
The results were interesting. Program Development garnered 13% of the responses, with Board Development and Fundraising both recording 25% of the responses. Financial Oversight came out on top with 35% of the responses. While it wasn’t a large sample group or a very scientific survey, one thing was clear. There’s a difference of opinion in what is considered the main role of a nonprofit Executive Director.
The Nonprofit Executive Director’s role in fundraising
The Executive Director needs to be actively engaged in fundraising activities, such as meeting with major donors, securing corporate sponsorships, and leading capital campaigns. Their credibility, reputation, and passion for the organization’s mission are essential for convincing donors to invest their time, money, and resources into the cause.
What do their fundraising responsibilities include? They cultivate and maintain relationships with donors, both existing donors and potential new supporters. Their ability to build trust and articulate a compelling vision for the future of the organization is often critical in securing large donations and long-term commitments. The Executive Director’s influence carries significant weight, especially when it comes to securing transformative major gifts or partnerships. When they personally engage with donors, it signals the importance of the donor’s contribution and can deepen the donor’s connection to the organization.
In addition to direct donor engagement, the Executive Director oversees the organization’s overall fundraising strategy. Oversees, not implements. The implementation of the strategy is the role of the organization’s Development professionals. This includes setting fundraising goals, developing campaigns, and ensuring all staff are aligned with the organization’s revenue generation objectives. The Executive Director must work closely with the board of directors, fundraising staff, and volunteers to create a strategic plan that not only meets immediate financial needs but also ensures long-term sustainability.
Effective fundraising requires a strong internal culture of philanthropy, where all team members understand their role in supporting fundraising efforts. The Executive Director’s leadership is key to fostering this culture.
An Executive Director is the bridge between the organization and the community it serves, effectively communicating the impact of the organization’s work. A successful Executive Director knows how to connect emotionally with donors, share stories of success, and demonstrate the tangible results of their support. Their ability to humanize the mission and connect with people on a personal level can be the difference between a one-time donation and sustained donor relationships. Having that message come from the Executive Director of the organization speaks volumes to donors and creates a culture of philanthropy within the organization, the board, and to external stakeholders and constituents.
